From our first cry to our last breath, our bodies undergo a continuous second-by-second transformation. We breathe, on average, 700 million breaths in a lifetime; an adult skeleton is replaced every seven to 10 years; we shed as many as 30,000 dead skin cells every minute; and the food we eat travels 30 feet (9 meters) on its journey through our bodies. Now, the National Geographic Channel (NGC) takes you beneath the skin to reveal how our bodies evolve from birth to old age, and the amazing biological systems we need to thrive.

Males fight to the death over females; a mother strives to protect her young. And if they can survive the harsh environment and sharks, countless shipwrecks and fishing nets provide unusually rich hunting grounds. With an arsenal of underwater equipment and cameras, we follow filmmaker Natali Tesche and the scientists working to uncover the secrets of how the octopus manages to thrive here. This stunning High Definition special will transport you to another dimension, as we dive deep below.

  • Dubai: Miracle or Mirage (2007) [Overview]
From ski slopes in the desert to man-made islands grouped to look like continents, Dubai is like no other place in the world. Surrounded by war zones, Dubai is an oasis of calm and the home of superlatives – the biggest building, the largest airport, the tallest hotel, the biggest mall, the richest horse race... the list goes on. Forty years ago it was a sleepy backwater, now Dubai is a magnet for the young and ambitious. But while it's become a centre of luxury and excess, it is also home to hundred of thousands of migrant labourers with little or no rights. They, along with a tsunami of other expats, are transforming Dubai into an economic and tourist powerhouse. To accommodate foreigners, especially the tourists, Dubai, a Muslim state, turns a blind eye to some of the visitors' excesses, to the great displeasure of many of the local Emirati. The driving force behind all this change is Dubai's leader, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum. He, with the help of his Maktoum relatives, has set Dubai on a daring course to be the first non-oil based economy in this volatile part of the world.

  • China's Lost Pyramids (2010) [Overview]
In China, there exists an astonishing place. A burial ground to rival Egypt’s Valley of the Kings, where pyramid tombs of stupendous size are full of astonishing riches. In 221 BC, China's first Emperor united warring kingdoms into a nation that still exists today. To memorialise this achievement, he bankrupted the national treasury and oppressed thousands of workers to build one of the world’s biggest mortuary complexes. China's second dynasty, the Han, inherited the daunting challenge of building larger tombs to command respect and establish their right to rule without running the nation into the ground. Although no Han emperor's tomb has been opened, the tombs of lesser Han aristocrats have revealed astonishing things: complete underground palaces (including kitchens and toilets) and at least one corpse so amazingly well-preserved some believe Han tomb-builders knew how to "engineer immortality". But most tombs were robbed, leaving another dynasty hundreds of years later – the brilliant Tang – to lead a revolution in tomb design, tunnelling simple shaft-tombs into natural mountains and filling them with small, inexpensive grave goods that symbolised more than reproduced the perfect afterlife.

For millions of Americans, the Labor Day weekend is the last big party of the summer. For the cops and emergency medical teams of Maricopa County, Arizona - like their counterparts across the U.S. – it can mean chaos, blood, and violence. Drunken States of America follows the mayhem that can be attributed to mostly one thing: alcohol!

Too many Labor Day revellers cross the line between a good time and dangerous intoxication. The consequences can be severe, ranging from physical injuries to prison. In this one-off show, experts explain the psychological and physical effects of drinking, traffic patrols search for people driving under the influence, hospital emergency rooms deal with victims of drunken shootings and knife attacks, and meet the repeat drink drive offenders who are working on chain gangs in desert jails.

As 80,000 Americans are killed by alcohol every year, can the emergency services ensure everyone makes it through the holiday weekend alive?

Street Racing: Zero Tolerance follows the high-octane home of a seriously high-stakes street racing sub-culture in Kent, Washington State, where you’re more likely to find the police force in a modified Dodge Challenger than a Black Maria.

Most cops patrol the streets in a regular squad car, but for some, keeping the peace requires a rather different beast. With illegal night-time races on the streets of this town reaching speeds of over 120mph, an elite task force of law enforcement officers is used to stop the would-be Lewis Hamiltons in their tracks – whatever it takes. It’s the ultimate game of cat and mouse, where one false turn could lead to tragedy. Fasten your seatbelts...
