R3, R4, R5 explanations

Movies in one of the following formats: DVD/VHS Screener (DVDScr/VHSScr; essentially pre-released, less-mastered DVDRips/VHSRips; can be clean or have watermarks such as 'Property of' messages, and black & white scenes), Workprint (WP), R5 DVD rip (R5.DVDRip; video encoded from a Russian retail DVD, while Russian audio usually replaced with cinema quality English audio), PDVD rip (PDVDRip; normally well-mastered TCs), VHS rip (VHSRip), LaserDisc capture (LDCap), and television source encodes (HDTV, DCCap, SatRip, DSR, TVRip).

R3, R4, R5 explanations

Post by Zewarrior » Tue Feb 13, 2007 11:48 am

R0 No Region Coding
R1 United States of America, Canada
R2 Europe, including France, Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Arabia, Japan and South Africa
R3 Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Borneo and Indonesia
R4 Australia and New Zealand, Mexico, the Caribbean, and South America
R5 India, Africa, Russia and former USSR countries
R6 Peoples Republic of China
R7 Unused
R8 Airlines/Cruise Ships
R9 Expansion (often used as region free)

R1 and R2 considered best quality.

Update:
A so-called "HDRip" is simply a re-encode made from a WEB-DL, so the correct tag is "WEBRip".

Thanks zewarrior, generally speaking R1 (23.976fps) & R2 (25fps) rips are touched up much better. R5 rips are released very early so not a lot of work is done on them, followed by R3 rips which are better but not usually as good as R1 or R2.

We only label R3, R4 & R5 rips in this forum, anything else should be either R1 or R2.

MD means Microphone Dubbed, audio recorded using a mic in the theatre. Lesser quality than LD (line dubbed, audio taken via a jack)
