Sancho client - Windows 10 compatibility issue

Post by MasterG » Sun Aug 18, 2019 12:53 pm

I have been happily using Sancho as a client to control MLDonkey on my QNAP server from Windows 7.
https://wiki.qnap.com/wiki/MLDonkey_Installation
It's time to upgrade to Windows 10.

Development and support for the Snacho client application stopped a few years ago and Windows 10 is not happy with the application.
There is an issue with the C++ programming and the app crashes after about 30 seconds.
Can anyone recommend an alternative GUI to access MLDonkey?

There is a wiki
http://mldonkey.sourceforge.net/Gui
But most that i have tried don't work or are not suitable. Sancho seemed to do everything.

don't use win10, but is there not an option to right click on the exe and use an earlier compatibility?

Hi
I also had an issue with some old programs, that did not like win7 and 64bit etc. I have installed virtual Box from oracle and installed a winxp licence into the box. This has work very well for a few years now.
just a thought.

I have the same problem as MasterG, also using Sancho with MLDonkey for many years. The problem came with Windows 10, it worked fine in Win 8.
I have tried all compatibility-settings, but nothing makes a difference.
The virtual machine with XP installed works, but for me, it's an inconvenient extra step, having to start up a virtual machine just for that.
Since I haven't found an alternative, I switch between using Sancho for quick tasks before it shuts down with error and using the mldonkeys own web interface which is quite outdated and clunky but usable.

Do anyone know other brands of nas servers which are supporting newer ed2k clients?

QNAP also support aMule from http://www.amule.org/ and the client works in Win 10. It don't handle torrents or magnet links, but the NAS also have Download Station that do that.

I usually install like this:

INSTALLATION
1. Install aMule on QNAP
2. On Win10, download aMule-2.3.1-installer.exe from https://sourceforge.net/projects/amule/ ... ule/2.3.1/
3. Start installer, but when you Select components to install:
- UN-check aMule
+ Check Remote Applications
Let these be checked
+ Skins
+ Translations
+Documentation
4. Finnish installation
5. Start aMule and add
+ IP-number to QNAP
+ Port 4712
+ User admin (or amule)
+ Password admin
6. IF you want "cutting edge" version 2.3.2 from 2016, you can according http://forum.amule.org/index.php?topic=21390.0 download binaries from https://github.com/kurniliya/amule-for-windows/releases Download aMule_2.3.2.1.zip and in C:\Program Files (x86)\aMule replace amulecmd.exe and amulegui.exe with the new binaries in the zip file.

ED2K LINKS
To make Ed2k links handling to work, we learn from http://wiki.amule.org/wiki/Ed2k_links_handling to
1. Create ed2k_remote.bat with this code (change 192.168.0.100 to your NAS IP)

Code: Select all

@echo off
set link=%1
for /f "useback tokens=*" %%a in ('%link%') do set link=%%~a
"c:\Program Files (x86)\aMule\amulecmd.exe" /h 192.168.0.100 /P admin /c "add %link%"
2. Copy ed2k_remote.bat to C:\Program Files (x86)\aMule
3. Create ed2k_remote_64bit.reg with this code

Code: Select all

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ed2k]
@="URL: ed2k Protocol"
"URL Protocol"=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ed2k\DefaultIcon]
@="C:\\Program Files (x86)\\aMule\\amulegui.exe"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ed2k\shell]
@="open"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ed2k\shell\open]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ed2k\shell\open\command]
@="\"C:\\Program Files (x86)\\aMule\\ed2k_remote.bat\" \"%1\""
4. Double click ed2k_remote_64bit.reg to add registry changes.

If you use 32 bit Win 10.
ed2k_remote.bat (change 192.168.0.100 to your NAS IP) =

Code: Select all

@echo off
set link=%1
for /f "useback tokens=*" %%a in ('%link%') do set link=%%~a
"c:\Program Files\aMule\amulecmd.exe" /h 192.168.0.100 /P admin /c "add %link%"
ed2k_remote_32bit.reg =

Code: Select all

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ed2k]
@="URL: ed2k Protocol"
"URL Protocol"=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ed2k\DefaultIcon]
@="C:\\Program Files\\aMule\\amulegui.exe"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ed2k\shell]
@="open"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ed2k\shell\open]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ed2k\shell\open\command]
@="\"C:\\Program Files\\aMule\\ed2k_remote.bat\" \"%1\""

Thanks Raffe, I will save your post for when I manage to replace my old ts-110 where Amule is not supported.

I can't see exacly from which modelnr. amule starts being available, but I'll be sure to check before I upgrade one sunny day.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I will use the Installed Sancho for torrent links as the app does not open and crash, virtualbox.org for Win7 to get to the ED2k links when using Sancho and embedded browser.
My QNAP box is too old for amule.

You should be able to install aMule on TS-110 with ipkg
See here in Italian: https://www.qnapclub.it/viewtopic.php?t=5272 (you don't need to reset to a clean system)
Or Google translated: https://translate.google.com/translate? ... 3Ft%3D5272
