Nintendo DS Tutorial

Post by OldChemist » Thu May 17, 2007 6:52 pm

Introduction

The Nintendo DS is the latest handheld system released by Nintendo. The Nintendo DS was originally released in the year 2004. In the year 2006 Nintendo released an upgrade to the Nintendo DS named the Nintendo DS Lite. The Nintendo DS Lite is one third the size of the original Nintendo DS while the Nintendo DS Lite also features 4 brightness settings compared to the Nintendo DS's 2 brightness settings.

Nintendo is famous for its long lasting series of popular games. These include its Final Fantasy series, its Kirby series, its Mario series, it's Metroid series, it's Zelda series, etc. Many of these games are not released on any other systems besides Nintendo consoles like the Nintendo 64, the Nintendo GameCube, the Nintendo Wii, etc.

In this tutorial you'll learn where to download Nintendo DS ROMS, and what's required to play these ROMS on your Nintendo DS.

Where do I get Nintendo DS ROMS?

Using eMule to get your ROMS
To use eMule to download your Nintendo DS ROMS you'll have to install and configure eMule. There is a great guide created by ARCH that will show you how to properly get eMule up and running to the best of its abilities. Here is the guide: eD2k/eMule - The Guide.

Nintendo DS ROM links
Now that eMule is all setup you can start to download your Nintendo DS ROMS. stevenrollastercoon has created a list of verified Nintendo DS ROMS which is now maintained by TheAnomaly. These ROMS are verified by users so they are guaranteed to work. Here is the list: Nintendo DS.

Slot-1 Nintendo DS Solutions vs Slot-2 Nintendo DS Solutions

There are two types of flash carts available for your Nintendo DS. The slot-1 solution is the new DS format flash cart which is at the top of your Nintendo DS. The slot-2 solution is the old GBA format flash cart which is at the bottom of your Nintendo DS. The major difference between slot-1 solutions and slot-2 solutions is that slot-1 devices don't offer GBA support.

Slot-1 Nintendo DS Solutions
Advantages
- Drag and drop support
- Built-in passme capabilities
- Near 100% Nintendo DS ROM capabilities

Disadvantages
- No GBA ROM support (can be solved by using an emulator)

Slot-2 Nintendo DS Solutions
Advantages
- GBA ROM support
- Near 100% DS/GBA ROM support

Disadvantages
- ROMS need to be patched through official software
- Requires a passme device to be bought

Slot-1 Nintendo DS Solutions

With slot-1 solutions you don't need any other hardware besides the slot-1 device. Unlike the slot-2 solutions, slot-1 devices come with built-in passme capabilities. This means you'll no longer need to purchase passme devices.

Flash carts
There are a ton of slot-1 flash carts on the market. This will leave you with a difficult decision on which flash cart to choose. GBAtemp offers a comparision chart which will help you compare features of each flash cart.

Generally the best flash carts would be:
- M3 DS Simply
- R4 DS
- Supdercard DS

The G6 team will be releasing a new slot-1 solution soon known as the G6 Real. If rumours are true the G6 Real will be one of the top slot-1 devices on the market. Generally speaking, anything from the M3 team/G6 team is a good investment. It's important to note that the M3 DS Simply and the R4 DS are manufactured by the same company. In early versions you used to be able to modify an M3 DS Simply and turn it into an R4 DS and vice versa. This is no longer capable.

Slot-1 solutions offer the unique capabilities of drag and drop support. This means that once you obtain your ROM, you can just drag the ROM onto the slot-1 device and that's it. There's no need for addition software like the slot-2 devices. This means that most slot-1 solutions offer close to 100% compatibility with all Nintendo DS ROMs.

One of the most popular places to purchase Nintendo DS accessories is Divineo.

Slot-2 Nintendo DS Solutions

In order to play Nintendo DS ROMS on your Nintendo DS you're going to need a flash cart and a passme device. The flash cart will allow you to store your Nintendo DS ROMS while the passme device will allow you to play these ROMS on your Nintendo DS bypassing Nintendo's piracy checks.

PassMe devices
There are many passme devices on the market, but by far the most popular passme device is the Passcard 3. The Passcard 3 doesn't require any configuration unlike older passme devices. Once you have obtained a Passcard 3 all that is required of you is to insert the Passcard 3 into your Nintendo DS slot-1.

Flash carts
The flash cart is where all your Nintendo DS ROMS will be stored. There are many different brands of flash carts which include:

- G6 Lite
- M3 Lite Perfect/Pro
- Supercard Lite

The G6 Lite works off of built-in memory while the M3 Lite and Supercard Lite work off of MicroSD cards. All three flash carts have high compatibility with Nintendo DS ROMS, so which ever flash cart you pick it really doesn't matter. The G6 Lite is probably the easiest of them all since you don't have to worry about buying a fast MicroSD card and spending extra money.

Since adding your Nintendo DS ROMS is different for each flash cart (albeit similar) I'll be linking you to external guides in this section.

- How to put commercial games on your nintendo ds (NOTE: Please ignore Tutorial One and scroll down to Tutorial Two)
- G6 Lite Guides & FAQ! (NOTE: You must register to the forums to view this guide)
- How to install the SuperCard

It's important to note that there are other flash carts besides the G6 Lite, M3 Lite and the Supercard Lite. It's also important to note that the teams behind the G6 Lite, M3 Lite and Supercard Lite are of the best quality companies out there for the Nintendo DS. If you want to be sure you get a quality product, be sure to purchase a G6 Lite, M3 Lite or Supercard Lite.
