BBC Natural World - Wild Harvest
Wednesday 14th December 2005

Information

Britain's countryside is undergoing a revolution. For decades our farmland wildlife has been in serious decline - a depressing tale of hedges ripped out, marshes drained and fields saturated with chemicals. Now something remarkable is happening - wildlife is starting to recover, and across our countryside there's real optimism that we can combine wildlife with productive farms. Thanks to the dramatic rise of organic farming and a brand new system of subsidies, animals like lapwing, skylark, dormice and barn owls are making a comeback. In Devon horseshoe bats are benefiting from organic cow pats, in Yorkshire black grouse are thriving thanks to later hay making. Could our countryside one day return to its former wild glory?

BBC Natural World - The King Cobra and I
Wednesday 9th November 2005

no link, sorry

Information

The King Cobra and I is the story of one man's quest to protect the world's largest venomous snake, the highly endangered and much feared
King Cobra - a giant reptile with enough venom to kill an elephant in one bite.
The film follows American ex-patriot Romulus Whitaker - World authority on the Snakes of India, as he travels around southern India, searching for the perfect place which may eventually become the world's first King Cobra sanctuary.
On his journey he risks his life to rescue Kings that have ventured out of their forest homes and into contact with India's ever growing
population.
King Cobras can grow up to 18 feet and are the only snake to build a nest. Romulus is in no doubt that this is truly the King of Serpents - they even eat other snakes!
As part of his captive breeding programme to restock wild populations, Rom introduces a prize male called Elvis to a female called Priscilla. The hatchlings are finally released by Rom into the remote jungles that he has selected as the home for a new generation of Kings.
Set to classic songs by Elvis Presley, this film gives a unique insight into the lives of these deadly, yet secretive creatures, through the eyes of a man who has a passionate desire to save them.

My VHS player of 10 years, decided to die in style.
Unfortunately, it had a tape in with this program on, and
took a good 10-feet of tape with it, all wound round the heads.
It took me a best part of 2 hours, carefully releasing the tape,
and rewinding it by hand.
There is no title, so I used a good static shot, and made one up.
There are small cuts, in places, that may seem a bit strange,
but were needed. Luckily, most of the chewed tape happens on slow
camera pans, and static shots, and without any narration.
I can only apologize for the above, but it was out of my hands.
It's perfectly watchable, and still remains one of my favourite
Natural Worlds.

BBC Natural World - Stalking The Jaguar
Wednesday 01st February 2006

No link, sorry.

Information

The Jaguar is South America's most mysterious predator - so secretive that even the scientists who study them can expect only a handful of sightings in a lifetime of research. Filming jaguars in the wild will be the greatest challenge yet for Big Cat specialists Owen Newman and Amanda Barrett. Equipped with amphibious buggies they head for Brazil's Pantanal, the world's biggest wetland, where jaguars feast on Caiman, Peccaries, Capybara and occasionally cattle. Deep in the wilderness, as the cameras begin to reveal remarkable new behaviour, the film makers start to wonder just who is stalking whom.

BBC Natural World - Bonobo: Missing in Action
Wednesday 8th March 2006

No link, sorry.

Information

The bonobo is the least known of all the great apes thanks to its remote jungle home in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It's a different kind of chimp, shy and peace loving, and it gives us a remarkable insight into our own gentler side.
Unlike the more violent common chimpanzees, bonobos live in peaceful societies ruled by females, where aggression is diffused by frequent sex. In the last few years their forest home has been overtaken by war, and scientists fear they are heading for extinction. This film follows Dr Frances White as she makes her first emotional journey back to the Congo to see if the bonobos she once studied have survived.

BBC Natural World - The Life Of Birds
1998

Image</img>

Information:
IMDb
Sir David Attenborough, master of the epic split sentence, is the undisputed king of the wildlife documentary. For 20 years he has been making award-winning wildlife films; his biggest and most popular series' to date being the ‘Life’ trilogy, and 'The Private Life of Plants'.

‘The Life of Birds’ Attenborough’s award winning opus, is another landmark in wildlife filmmaking; an odyssey to the furthest corners of the world, every bit as ambitious as his previous projects. This wonderful series details the physics of bird flight, feeding habits, nest building, the rearing of young and the unique adaptations that allow birds to live in a diverse rage of environments.

Over three years in the making, Attenborough travelled 256,000 miles during filming - 10 times round the Earth. The latest wildlife filming techniques have been employed, from ultra-slow motion, night vision (‘starlight’) cameras to tiny cameras that film inside nests.

The results are truly spectacular and provide footage of some of the world's rarest birds and examples of remarkable avian behaviour; many that have never been filmed before. In the pitch of night a lone kiwi, one of the shyest of all birds, probes for sand hoppers along a rugged New Zealand beach. Less than two feet away, Attenborough lays observing its progress. A micro-camera, positioned inside the branch of a tree, observes a New Caledonian crow using a twig to extract a grub. Migrating ducks and geese on the wing are filmed seemingly from within the flock - the cameras just inches from their subjects.

2003

Quote:
The Mountain Troop is the most powerful in the kingdom, and it lives in the best location. That is where Bobo is born. From the moment of his birth, Bobo is at the very pinnacle of troop hierarchy and is treated like a prince. But a territorial war between two rival troops changes his life forever. Once his princely status comes to an abrupt end, he has little choice but to find a new home. Somewhere between fact and fiction, The Monkey Prince delves into the destiny of a remarkable monkey and reveals the private lives of two rival troops by showing their territorial wars and their interaction with human and natural worlds.

BBC Natural World - The Last Lions of India
18th October 2006

No information link, sorry.

Information

Documentary about Asiatic lions, which are completely different from African lions in both appearance and behaviour but are thriving in India. Their refuge is the Gir forest in Gujarat, and in the last 100 years their numbers have grown from 20 to over 300. They are now spreading out beyond the protection of the National Park, reclaiming lost territory and colonising new habitats. It's a rare conservation success story but one that brings new challenges to lions, naturalists and forestry staff.

Just found this and it looks quite interesting:

The Natural World - A Boy Among Polar Bears

Documentary about Apak Taktu, a young Inuit boy, making his first trips out onto the Arctic sea-ice with his father. Apak learns the skills essential to survival in the hostile wilderness - building igloos, travelling by dog sled, hunting seals and narwhals, and avoiding the dangerous attention of polar bears. A stunning portrait of the Canadian High Arctic, one of the coldest yet most beautiful places on earth.

BBC Natural World - Africas Desert Garden (2006)
Image

This film chronicles the magical transformation of a landscape. Every spring, a barren stretch of land 100 km inland from South Africa’s west coast is briefly transformed into the largest flower show on the planet. Thousands of brightly colored species are pollinated by oil collecting bees within the few precious weeks before the blazing summer heat turns the garden to dust.

Meerkats, ostriches and sheep also prevail in the springtime season of Namaqualand. But as summer approaches, these animals struggle to eke out an existence. Relief is found down the coast where icy but nutrient rich Atlantic waters rise up against Namaqualand’s shores. Summer is the perfect time for marine animals to breed.

Half a million Cape fur seals and Cape gannets settle on beaches and rock to breed. Jackals roam the long beaches for food and seals prey on chicks of their neighbors. After seven months of scorching heat and searing winds, great Antarctic rainstorms sweep north and pound Africa’s west coast. Through the cold passage of winter, the desert slowly turns green and Namaqualand once again becomes the greatest garden on earth.
