WinBorg XP April 2012 DVD

Image

What is Winborg XP?

If you boot with this DVD and start one of the setup routines, this will clean install a corporate edition of Windows XP Pro SP3 updated to the month of release. The aim is for you to be able to stick this DVD in, quickly get setup running, and then when setup finally stops, your computer is ready to use. There are no steps in between, you don't need to do a thing, you get a fully unattended installation of everything. This means all your device drivers installed and no critical updates need installing. You just sit back and enjoy the ride.

Actually, there are some options you can select, in particular, the Driver Packs Selector is something you'll want to look out for as the operating system is installed because you can choose extra driver packs that aren't selected by default and you can also un-select some to save some time for the install. You can also set the type of screen resolution you have - standard or widescreen - this will make the end result a lot more satisfying to gaze upon.

Winborg XP was created by BartOfBorg. Further development since August 2006 by Soporific.

4 different flavours of Windows XP Professional SP3 to choose from:
- the choices involve whether you want:
> to use the driverpacks
> to install the OS without any tweaks or addons
> to install either the standard tweaked OS or the WinBorg one. See below for more info on the differences.

There's a tools menu available with a choice set of tools to help you with your hardware if need be.

The install theme

The setup billboard screen theme has been split in 2. The first part is Matrix inspired while the second is all about the Borg.

Image

Driverpacks

The driverpacks and screen resolution selection utility starts after your PC first reboots during the installation of the operating system. This is a good thing to watch out for because you can select extra driverpacks that aren't selected by default (as shown below). It starts after your PC reboots for the first time during setup (after the blue screen part). New in the November edition of Winborg XP is the PhysX driverpack which provides extra juicy drivers for the latest graphics cards.

You can also set the style of your screen resolution. For extra impact of your new operating system right out of the box, please set this to your usual screen resolution. There are only 2 options - Standard and Widescreen. Hopefully you all know which is which ;) -- if you don't and you have a widescreen monitor, the resolution is automatically set to 1024 x 768 (or higher) and this may not look very good. You can simply change it in Display Setting like normal, i'm just saying here that it will aid in giving you the pleasure of a good looking PC when setup is all finished.

The Operating System

This is the scene at the end of setup:

The OS is Windows XP Professional with SP3 v5512 integrated. You should not need to download any further hotfixes, and you should be able to 'validate' at any time with any OS you install from this DVD. When you visit Windows Update, you do not have to download or install anything in order to use it, the necessary files have already been integrated.

WinBorg XP Builder

For those not familiar with Winborg XP, see above for details of the April 2012 release.

What is the Winborg XP Builder?

i find it pretty hard to make decisions on what to include and what to leave off each and every Winborg XP disc i release. The choices are many! Update Packs, NLite tweaks, RVM addons, Driverpacks, Driverpack defaults, post-install hotfixes, post-install apps, Apps library contents, wallpapers, themes, setup music, and more! Rather than let me decide, why don't you decide?!

I have written the builder so anyone can build their own WinBorg XP DVD. well, nearly everyone - please see the requirements below. If you simply want to use the default settings -- download the builder, run it, and make your DVD image. This will be exactly as if i built the image and released it. Or, you can use the Builder Options utility and totally customize the DVD for your own needs.

Instructions

1) System requirements

* a windows machine -- the builder will only work on a Windows system (it uses Windows scripting). I have only tested this on an XP machine, but i can't see any reason why it won't also work on Vista and Win7 machines. Please report your experiences with using the Builder on PCs with these OSes.
* English language -- i'm pretty sure you will need to use an English OS in order for all the scripting to work. Feel free to try this out in a VM with a different language OS and report your experiences.
* Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0 or higher is needed for some of the programs the builder uses
* 10 gigs of space - the builder will contain nearly 10 gigs of data by the time it has finished.

2) Preparation

* Extract contents of the released file into a new folder.

* Run Builder_Options.exe -- this is a script that acts like a guided tour of all the things you can customize on the DVD, and will also help keep it updated. It will open each folder location for you, open any readme.txt files you need to read, and URL shortcuts are provided to check for updates. Just run it and follow the prompts.

3) Using the Builder

* Winborg_Builder.exe -- this is the file to run when you want to start building. You have the option of running it in Auto mode, or Step-by-Step mode. Auto will run the scripts without stopping until the section where you are asked if you want to make the DVD image. Step-by-Step mode allows you to step thru the 25 sections that comprise the builder. If you need to stop the build in the middle, or want to start from a particular step, you can.

* Clear_Build.exe -- this is a small utility that will clear out any build files from any previous builds. This is actually a part of Winborg_Builder.exe but i have made it a stand-alone utility in order to easily clear a build. I use it when i am moving the build folder from one location to another (eg from Home to Work). Without it, you will be carrying around extra files you don't need to lug around.

* settings.ini -- this is the settings file for Winborg_Builder.exe -- with this file you can set the work directory. This is useful if you have 2 or more physical HDDs -- set the work folder to a different drive than the one holding the build files.

* Build_log.txt -- this is a time-stamped log file produced as the builder runs. It is useful for trouble-shooting and will also provide the time it takes to perform each step.

Please note: this version is based upon the December 2010 release. A newer version based on June 2011 will be coming soon.

If you want to build your own Winborg XP grab the builder, if you are happy with the pre-prepared version then grab the latest pre-built edition.

Nice Share. :)

soporific, not trying to be disrespectful or anything, but should'nt you mention and give credit to the original creator (BartOfBorg) of WinBorg versions? :)

True, i should and I now have on the first post ... thanks for the correct info, I actually thought it was by someone else. Cheers.

Also: hundreds of people have / are downloading this but I'm yet to receive much feedback on the actual DVD contents. Even after some of you promised. You're not the messiah, you're a very naughty boy! (or girl as the case may be) === I want to do another one for a December release but I want to know NOW what's good about it, what's bad about it, etc etc. Please, please can you return to this thread and tell all what you found!!

Questions you could answer:

- was the DVD worth downloading?
- does it work as advertised?
- are there any bugs or problems you've encountered?
- is the background picture for the post-install menu any good?
- are the Startup and Shutdown media files any good?
- are there any obvious omissions from the list of 3rd party apps?
- why is George Bush the head of the US government?
- why hasn't an attempt been made yet on his life?
- Do the registry tweaks work as intended?

Thanks in advance for all replies!! File sharers rock !!

Hi soporific.

Just a question. Is this dvd suposed to be bootable?

Went through all the steps a couple times and burnt a couple dvds they both are the exact same size as the virtual drive and everything appears to be there when i browse the dvd , it will auto run from within windows but computer wont see it as a boot disk, any hints would be great. Thanks :)

yep, it is and its definitely been out in the wild and has been used and you're the first to report booting problems. Here's some things you can do:

1) make sure another boot cd can be recognised by your CD drive. Ideally you should be trying a boot DVD (as opposed to a CD) but if the drive recognises the DVD (ie autoruns well enough) and you can boot from a CD then that should cover this step.
2) actually that pretty much exhausts my suggestions. I would say you may find the fault while carrying out the above step so see how you go with that and then report back. When you do, try to include as much info about what you are seeing on the screen ie any messages, etc.

only problem i had was that i couldn't do a full format before the install. I had to use my boot cd to format then insert winborg dvd, reboot and install. Everything went fine and it seems to be stable. Thank you Soporific a good job very well done.
Also tested with Zone alarm and Kaspersky security suites and found no hidden surprises.

schlash wrote:I have used the original Winborgs for a long time and on many computers and consider myself a friend of young Bart of Borg.
His excellent work deserves (in my humble opinion) slightly more recognition than you have given him.
I in no way wish to detract from your additional work on his creation but I honestly feel that you should give more recognition to the blood sweat and tears shed whilst creating the basis of your work.
In addition his tech support is faultless, will you be able to achieve the same level?
My 2cents

Me.

Hi schlash. I am also a friend of Bart of Borg. soporific has promptly recognized "Bart of Borg" after I pointed it out to him and He has edited the first post to reflect this info. There is no problem here.

To prove there is no problem, here is a quote of BartofBorg concerning soporific upgrading WinBorg XP 5.0 when informed of the fact.

Bart of Borg wrote:Oh well....what to say? I never hear of this but....it's not like i have a copyright! If somebody wants to use my DVD...it's not like I'm gonna be able to stop em........a little recognition would have been nice but, at least he left iso-tek's url on the wallpaper! I don't mind....like I said it's not big deal.

I understand what you are saying about more recognition and credit to Bart of Borg, but I believe soporific is still in the tweaking process of his version which I believe will be a great asset and addition to the WinBorg Family. I may be mistaken, but i believe soporific will be giving an official name to his version to distinguish his and other versions.

With that said, let's enjoy this version created by soporific and spread it around. If you know Bart, then you surely know what I quoted above is true.

soporific, your DVD rocks. I left you another message in your inbox here.

I have passed it around. One member of another forum wrote a problem he had which i will quote him below.

I 've booted off this disk and went as far as installing windows. After it loads all the setup files and reboot my computer my monitor goes black with a red ,green and blue dots on my screen. It seems like the video driver are something is wrong. I've tried this twice with same results at the same spot. I can get pass the format screen and loads all setup files. But that is when screen goes black after the reboot.

I will await your response. Thanx again and keep up the excellant work! :thumbs

But that is when screen goes black after the reboot.

OK that's two people who have reported possible driver issues ... i'm on the case. Will post more info and hopefully a solution very soon. Stay tuned ...

PS - Molari, i didn't get your new message ...

EDIT: OK i've confirmed that the problems most likely lie with the driver packs. The first thing the OS does after the first reboot is extract the drivers (and i'm assuming also starts assigning drivers to devices) It seems that the OS guesses wrong when trying to install the correct drivers for certain devices. See below for various solutions ... and I just found out that if I had checked the day before I released the DVD I could have included ALL of the new updated packs that I've listed below. D'OH !!! Sorry 'bout that ...

Solution no. 1: update the driver packs - there have been new releases to some of the packs. These are the versions on the DVD with the updates in brackets if any:
DP_Chipset 6.08 (6.09.1)
DP_CPU 6.08 (6.09.1)
DP_Graphics_A 6.08 (6.09)
DP_Graphics_B 6.03 (6.08)
DP_Graphics_C 6.03 (unchanged)
DP_LAN 6.08 (6.08.1)
DP_MassStorage 6.031 (6.08)
DP_Sound_A 6.061 (6.08.1)
DP_Sound_B 6.06 (6.08)
DP_WLAN 6.05 (6.08)

It is extremely easy to update the packs. Just delete the old one and replace it with the new one. The code doesn't need to know the name of the pack, it just has to be inside \OEM and have the .7z extension. Then reburn the DVD.

Solution no. 2: don't use the driver packs - extract all the files from the DVD, and delete all the .7z files in the \OEM directory (or better yet, only delete the pack that seems to be the problem) and then re-burn the DVD image using the instructions in the makeDVD folder.

Solution no. 3: have a look through the following lists of known issues:
-nForce 3 LAN not yet working, DriverPack LAN update on the way... (has been fixed in updated version of the LAN pack)
-installing onto an nForce 3/4/5 mass storage controller results in a BSOD
-installing onto a Sillicon Image SiI3112 SATALink/SATARAID results in a BSOD
-When you've got a certain Windows XP version (not isolated to a specific one yet), then the original svcpack.inf file is encoded in UCS-2 Little Endian. Whenever you use DriverPack Sound A, KB888111 and KB921401 will be slipstreamed and then svcpack.inf will have to be updated. But Windows fails to convert the original encoding to ANSI, and the result is a CORRUPT svcpack.inf! A solution is at hand! Check issue #142 at the bugtracker for detailed information.
Solution no. 4: learn how to insert the drivers for your system into the driver packs. I don't know how to do this but it may be possible. Go to http://www.driverpacks.net for more info

Thanks man this really rocks You can use it just to update the look of your current install(which is what I used it for)
On the fresh install I had a few Problems Worked Fine On an amd Xp3000 chip set but on an Asus P4s800de with a 3ghz P4 and a Sata drive it crashed as soon as the proper install began> blue screened every time.

Can anybody tell me how do you install this O.S without having a boot disc.?

I mean if you install any O.S it requires a Boot disc but these are of image files.

I am running my Win 2000 professional, so I f I update the O.S will it cause any problems?

This is a very useful share. And the compilation of software and drivers is great. This dvd is a must for advanced users.
Thanks very much.

This is a boot disc, its in the description. You already have a great OS on your pc now,so why install xp? But if you do,do a clean install, not an upgrade.

Hi soporific. I have sent you an e-mail to your hotmail...have not heard from you over a week and been wondering if all is alright on your end. Please let me know. :)

I have another member who has an issue. Here is the quote from him: Thanks :thumbs

OK, call me stupid but I tried. Can't change the drivers. Been working on this isue for a couple of days now and did not want to ask, but had to tuck my tail between my legs. I never used Alcohol before but got that up and running OK. Downloaded all new drivers. Viewed and found the files to be changed in ALcohol.
Now this is where the fun begins. Can't delete or change the files...they are read only!! this is probably because they are mounted in Alcohol's vertual drive which is a running program, so as long as it is running, nothing can be changed. Tried "UltraISO", but it can't mount the ISO file because it is bigger than 4GB's. Tried to copy the files to a new folder....that worked...changed the files...but nothing I have will reburn it to 1 disc.
Now I know that I must be missing something here???
Read the help files in Alcohol and I don't see anything to explain how to change anything??
Has any one else been able to do this and if so how??

OK here is what I know and have Tried so far!!
This program is so large and filled with goodies that it almost taps out the limits of a DVD.
The first DVD I burn't was of the orignal ISO image. Used Nero. Had it set to verify the results and it found some errors after burrning.
Tried it on a 4 year old laptop. With Windows running (WinXP) the disc would boot up as it should.
Shut down the computer and reboot.. It asked to boot from CD...Hit enter..Booted up into dos and I deleted the partion and reformatted from there and all went well to this point. When format was done and on reboot I got blue screen and the cursor just sat there. Rebooted about 4 times then it finally started to install WinBorg. (looked just like a Windows install window) I got no option before hand to select any programs. It just installed the default I guess. It did install and WinBorg is running. Now that it was up and running I place the disc back in and it booted up in windows and then I installed the programs I wanted. Worked fine this way, But had a problem booting in dos.
Now to try to install the new drivers. There is no option in Alcohol to remove and replace anything. (at least I could not find anything) When I tried... it would not let me...probably because it is in Alcohol and that is a running program, and as long as a program is running you can't do anything with it.
Now I tried to mount The original ISO in UltaISO...."Can't open it...File is larger than 4GB's"
Tried mounting it in UltraISO from Alcohol's virtual drive....That worked??? Don't know why it would not mount it from the original??
Anyway it is now in UltraISO where I can edit it....Delete the old drivers from the OEM file...Installed the new drivers.
In UltarISO it told me that the Original mount was...4473 MB's and after I installed the new drivers it went to 4490 MB's.
Tried to burn it with UltraISO.....Error....Need larger disc??
Had UltaISO turn it into An ISO file....Mounted that in Alcohol and tried to burn it from there with Nero...Error...This will need 2 disc's.
Tried Roxio....same thing....need 2 disc's.
Now I know this won't work as a 2 disc install
OK...Have to remove something from the program itself to bring it back down or below 4473 MB's
Reopened the original again in UltraISO...Changed the drivers again...searched out and removed Kaspersky Anti Virus (crack did not work anyway) and removed iTunes..(I would not use it anyway). In both I just removed the install exe files and replaced them with a bootin file that I renamed to the orignal file's with the exe extension. So far so good!! The file size is now 4440 MB's...33 MB's bellow the orignal...4473 MB's.. Had UltraISO create a new ISO file.....Open it in Alcohol...Burnt it with Nero. All goes well!!
Put the disc in while Windows is running and it boots up as should be...Shut down and restart computer to bring it up in dos.....NO go?? it won't work. It just bypass's that and windows boots back up???? Now What??

Now I know that the original creator (soporific) said that:
*****************************************************************************************
"Just delete the old one and replace it with the new one. The code doesn't need to know the name of the pack, it just has to be inside \OEM and have the .7z extension. Then reburn the DVD."
*****************************************************************************************

But does it really matter....Never know unless I try.
Went through all the steps again (this time I found I only had to remove iTunes to be at or below 4473 MB's ) Installed the new drivers....renamed them to match the orignals....burnt it again........Same thing.....Will boot up in windows, as it should, but will not boot up on a reboot?? into dos...
I'm LOST here. All I have done is to replace the drivers and remove programs that are just add on's anyway to make it fit on one disc. I changed nothing else??

I have tried this before with my original HP format disc's....I Tried to remove add on program's that I did not want or would never use and had the same results....Would not boot into dos??

Now I might be grabbing at straws here, but could the original install program know the exact size of the original disc, and if altered it will not work. Now I know this does not sound right, but I have done the same thing with 2 completely different programs now and have the same end result???? WON"T BOOT INTO DOS....There has to be someone out there that might know if this were posible??

I guess that my next attempt will be to do the same as above and try to match the new ISO with the Original in exact size. That's going to take some doing. Right now I have to take a break before the wife kill's me!!

sorry for going AWOL but i went somewhere for our long weekend we just had down under and i'm desperately trying to catch up.

EDIT: OK, i think there's limitations being hit here. Here's what happens during install:

1) Once you've got setup running (ie after the format of the system drive) you are still in the blue screen setup and you can see the name of the files being copied over to the hard drive. I don't expect anyone to have problems with this stage. If so, its definitely nothing to do with the DVD package. Once this stage completes, its a different story.

2) Then the computer reboots and the next thing is the driver packs are unpacked. While it happens, all you see is the blue GUI background screen (ie not the blue setup screen) This may take up to 10 minutes on a reasonably fast computer, so it could take 10 to 20 minutes on a 4 yr old laptop computer! I wonder, if the person was watching the setup happen, they may have got impatient and not let the full process run and rebooted thinking there was a problem. Also, the driver packs need over 1gb of space while setup runs, so if you don't have the space, you will have problems. After the driver packs have finished unpacking, then the next stage is the GUI stage of setup and you can see the Borg theme with the funny script, etc.

3) more soon

Unfortunately no. This is a way to create an unattended boot DVD that spans a number of CDs but it is a reasonably involved process and not on the drawing board to be included in the next version. I did try to create a CD version of the project with no extra apps, but the driver packs won't fit on.

With regards to no DVD burner, I think now is the time to bite the bullet and get one! They are dirt cheap now and are an absolete necessity for everyday life so that's your best option. Installation is dead easy: just swap the CD ROM you already have with the DVD burner -- no other installation steps are necessary --- the only thing you may need to change is the jumper -- just make sure the jumpers are in the same position on both drives.

I'm happy to answer any other questions ...

Sop.

very strange, no one else has reported being blocked from logging in ... but I'm here to help so don't despair ... please answer the following:

* what are the basic specs of the machine you have installed Winborg on?
* which of the registry tweaks did you install, if any, from the post-installation applications menu?
* have you tried re-installing, with different options from the post-installation applications menu?

I recommend trying a re-install, but when you get to the post-installation applications menu, de-select everything, and see if that goes OK. If you get past the login stage, you can then install all the 3rd party apps you want afterwards. Hope this helps. Oh and by the way, ideas for improving the next version are still coming thick and fast - the next release won't be recognisable!

Re: my previous post, i have finally returned home and after re-installing i have it all working with no problems!!! Works really well, apart from a few programs that have outdated cracks etc, which is easy to fix anyway, great collection of software sop. the install is quite straighforward and i would reccommend for newbies like me to not change or tick any registry upgrades during the pre-install, i think this might be why i had problems with my windows logon screen, maybe!!! Sop, i cant really add anymore feedback other than everything is working as advertised, great work mate and i look forward to the next one!!!!

At first I was planning for a december update, then I was planning on releasing a new version immediately because I could see so many aspects that needed improving. But I am also working on another project which is taking longer than anticipated. SO its back to a December release for the next version. Lets say December 10 which will hopefully include the latest updates from Dec 8.

Please get your suggestions for improving Windows XP Regeneration in by then !!! the earlier the better ... in particular, which 3rd party apps would you like included?

Re: Kaspersky and PowerDVD --- they both seem to be not working as intended. Sorry, they did work when I was testing!
